4-2 Design Days

In this lesson, we’re going to add design days to eQUEST. Adding design days is easy. You just need to go to the “Project & Site” module, and here you can right-click on the project and select “create design day.” This option will not be available on any of these other modules, so it’s very important to be on the Project & Site module. We’ll create the design day, and we’re going to start with the Cooling Design Day. What this does is, it will assume temperatures outside of typical TMY data to oversize (not necessarily oversize, more right-size) your cooling equipment. The next screen asks us to enter these parameters. A good source of this, and as is typically required by lead, is to add the 1% for cooling — and for Denver, CO this is 90. The wetbulb at that range is 59 (which makes sense, because Denver’s a pretty dry climate) and then we add the range. eQUEST will simulate this through the course of the day, and it knows that it’s hotter at 3pm than it is at other hours of the day, and we’ll get to that in a minute. If we enter a range of 0, that means that we’re going to just stick to this 90/59 drybulb/wetbulb condition, and we’re going to simulate through the day, and assume that the angles of the sun change, but that the temperature does not. That’s a bit of a safety factor.

When we click “done,” we get this screen. The hour high is 15, so that’s 3pm, and the hour low is 4, which is 4am. Of course, we’re simulating that it’s 90 or 59 at either of these hours. If we added a 10 degree delta here, it would assume that it is 90/59 drybulb/wetbulb at 3pm and it would assume that it’s 80 degrees fahrenheit at the low hour. The month number, the start day, and the number of days. The month number is 6, that’s 21. That’s the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, which goes through the most significant amount of sun. The design day is typically not on 6/21, and it could be any other time of the year, so it’s a good idea to offset this to 120, because cooling design has a number of factors. The sun’s angle, the length of the day, thermal mass, temperatures — all of that factors into the cooling design. So it’s probably best to not just run one day. If we run this from 6-1, so June 1st, for 120 days, that gets June, July, and August, which is most likely to have the cooling design day, provided that you’re in the northern hemisphere. From here, we can click “done,” and now let’s add another design day. This time it’s going to be a heating design day.

Notice here we only have one input. People may ask why, and the reason is that the heating design point occurs when it’s dark out, so all the concern about the duration of the sun being out, the angle of the sun, the azimuth of the sun — all of that is immediately removed, and we don’t have to worry about that. We also don’t have to worry about the wetbulb temperatures, because at cool temperatures, it’s unlikely that we have to worry about humidity. And the 99.6% from Ashrae Standard 90.1, 2007, appendix D, is -3 for Denver. We can click “done,” and we’re prompted with a similar screen that we just looked at for the cooling design day. Except for the fact that you see the drybulb range is automatically 0, the hour high and the hour low are pretty much irrelevant, and the month number and the start day is December 21st, which is the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year, which means the longest night. We could run this through a number of other days, but considering this is going to happen when it’s dark, it’s really likely that you’re going to get very close proximity when you model this with just one day versus multiple days, and the calculations will proceed much more quickly this way.

From here, we have our design days modeled. When we get to a simulation, we’ll take a look at how to see the design day reports. Infiltration is so complicated that Ashrae 90.1 does not actually standardize it. That’s not to say that eQUEST can’t model infiltration; it’s just saying, be careful of over-indulging in infiltration, because you can get very confused, and you’re not necessarily increasing the accuracy of your project.

eQUEST has a phenomenal ability to model infiltration. Let’s take a look at some of them. If we go to the spreadsheet view, then we have to select “infiltration,” under the building shell module. One of the best places to start is to right-click under the infiltration cfm/ft2. This has all of the infiltration methods, and a table of whether the wind speed correction is utilized, and the inside-outdoor temperature difference is also corrected for. The common methods that you’re going to see are the air-change method — and there’s two choices there as well, we have the air changes per hour, and the infiltration per area. Notice, there’s actually no windspeed correction in the second option, and there is in the first. These other methods are more and more complicated, with the most complicated being the Ashrae-Enhanced method. That’s really only for experts, because the coefficients are so hard to get.

Let’s take a look at the infiltration inputs by default. The two that we’ll have by default are the air change methods. You’ll either have the air changes per hour, or the cfm/ft2. Now, in the wizard, cfm/ft2 was per square foot of wall. In the detailed mode, this is per square foot of the space. Typically, we can enter one of these two numbers, and it will default to the cfm/ft2, but if we want to incorporate the wind speed correction, so that will go into the hourly database and find the windspeed, and there will be a correction in infiltration for that particular hour. We would want to actually go through this and we could probably set up a spreadsheet to convert these, or we could find some sort of flat rate and convert those numbers here — set all these numbers to 0.

So the factors that we have are just general infiltration, the temperature correction, and the wind speed correction. The more detailed components we run into in infiltration are things like the stack effect. Those are incorporated in the S-G method, the Crack method, and the Ashrae-Enhanced method. If we go ahead and look at Ashrae Enhanced, we will see that this enables a number of other coefficients that the default propagates. You’ll have to look at Ashrae’s sources to get these exact coefficients down, and a number of other things. Typically this method is not used. Maybe by very detailed energy models, but it’s typically overkill for what we want to define. The Crack method has only one additional input, and that’s the neutral zone height.

If you look at the item help here, it’s typically half the height of the building. We have a page on stack effect, under one of our free courses, if you want to learn more about the stack effect, but it’s typically at about 50% of the building’s height, is the neutral zone, so i.e. a 300ft building would have the value here be 150. This is probably the most common method to use if you’re trying to incorporate the stack effect. Another complicated method with a number of variables is the S-G method. This is the horizontal leak ratio, the leak fraction, and the S-G neutral level, which in this case, instead of being a heightened feet, is at .5 for the default.

As we said earlier, infiltration is very complicated in nature. In fact, you could have a building built by the exact same materials, and of course you would have different infiltration. So, this is something that in building simulation, you have to take in stride, because the building that goes up will not have the same infiltration that you could possibly predict. However, if we want to analyze our infiltration, one of the things to do is to create a custom report. If we want to create a custom hourly report, there’s a few ways to do this. You can see we already have some hourly report blocks. We have no hourly reports, so what we’ll do is we’ll right-click here, and create an hourly report.

There’s no need to create one from the library, since you’ll end up just selecting “hourly report schedule” from the library anyway. And right here, it tells us, let’s select the first report block. We have to select something. Here we have our reports and our report block. We’re going to rearrange this. Let’s create a new block. Create space infiltration, create this from scratch, and we just select a space. We can go through here and select “infiltration flow rate.” And then we’ll want to un-check our other option, because we just want the infiltration flow rate. If you notice, space infiltration is not under our infiltration set of reports, so what we can do here is select this infiltration, and check “space infiltration.” Now we can un-check our “EM1 Hourly Report Block” and this is how this was originally. The EM1 and the FM1 hourly report blocks were separate outside of our infiltration report.

The reason we had to do that this way is because we have to select one of these reports, or a new report, when we first create the infiltration block. So we selected one but just later un-selected it. Now what we can do… we can make a new block, we can copy an existing block, and we’re going to copy space infiltration. We don’t need to worry about the child components. We have HVAC infiltration right here, let’s click on “infiltration,” and we’re going to assign this under the infiltration hourly report.

As soon as we check that, we can see that it automatically gets lumped into this infiltration report. Now we need to fix the HVAC infiltration, because it’s just a copy of the space infiltration — which of course we’re only looking at one space. So here, we’re going to go to the HVAC system. The outside air infiltration rate, we can check and we’ll un-check this other option. One thing does have to be checked, or it will not allow us to continue. And here we can look at our electric meter and our fuel meter. These are just standard hourly report blocks, but right here is the custom infiltration report that we made. We are looking at one space, and we’re looking at one system, AHU 1.

We could copy this, and switch the system, but there’s no need to add more thing than that. In fact, I imagine by now you’re somewhat confused, if this is the first time you did this. This is just something that you need to walk through yourself, and it starts to make sense pretty quickly. Now we’re going to simulate the building. And we’ll just simulate the base line. We’ve skipped the simulation, for time’s sake, and we can look at the detailed sim file. You can see if we go to Space Peak Loads, we’ll have the design day report, and now we’ll have the standard report, because we added the design days.

If we look at the components, we’ll have all of the component design days, plus we’ll have all of the regular components. We can compare those, to see which one ended up with the larger load, which should typically be the design day. What we had just input are the hourly results, and if we click this here, the hourly results button, it will open up Excel. Here we have our infiltration flow rate, and our outside air infiltration. One is on the system level, one is on the space level.

You can see they vary from hour to hour, and that could be from the methodology. That could also be from infiltration schedule, so you will want to determine what exactly your infiltration schedule was, to make sure that that was not accounting for the difference that you see hourly here. If you wanted to compare infiltration methods, the best thing to do would be to run a parametric run, and select the infiltration method as something different, using the hourly report, and compare them side-by-side.

We have 8770 rows here, because we started on row 11, and there’s 8760 hours in the year.
