2-1 Wizard Comparison

We’re going to go ahead and take a break from our model and slow things down a bit, and cover a topic that a lot of people have questions about, and that topic is: which wizard should I use?

You may not have this question, but eventually, someone’s going to ask whether or not you should use the SD wizard or the DD wizard. Now, some people should always use the SD wizard, and some people should always use the DD wizard. Of course, if you know enough about this to disagree, then this rule doesn’t apply to you.

Let’s go ahead and open eQUEST.

We’re going to create a new project via the wizard, and we’re going to start with the SD wizard. Of course, the main difference that people point out is that the SD wizard can only have one shell — you can see that right here — and the DD wizard can have multiple shells. You can see the bottom here is shell one, and stacked on top of that is shell two.

If we go ahead and hit the SD wizard, we’ll just leave the complete defaults. We’ll get rid of the utility rate. Leave the simplified schedules. Let’s go ahead and click the jurisdiction set to “other.” If we go to the next screen, the advantage to the SD wizard is that it’s completely linear. Fill out a screen, go to the next screen and continue, and all the screens that you are required to fill out will either be disabled or enabled based on the previous screens.

What this means is that somebody with very little experience can make an energy model that will actually run and produce results. Of course, the validity of those results is up to the experience of the person, but even a rather inexperienced person can use the SD wizard because of the linear properties of the interface.

If we go ahead and click “finish,” this renders really quickly. We have our 3D geometry. If we look at our reports, we just go to the total energy consumption, we get 217.72 x 1000 kilowatt hours. We go back to the project view, and we switch this to the design development wizard. It gives us a warning, but we’ll go ahead and convert the current project to the DD wizard.

This means that there’s no going back. This is the interface for the DD wizard, that of course we’re familiar with by now. It’s non-linear in nature; it has a number of linear screens, but it’s most definitely non-linear. Meaning, you need to know something about building physics to actually use this in general.

We just click finish again, and we simulate this. We look at the same report. We made no changes, and yet this number changed drastically. In fact, it changed by something like 20%. So why the change? The reason for the change is that the schedules, by default in the DD wizard, are more realistic than they are in the SD wizard. We can go ahead and if we go into the DD wizard, into our shell, we can look at our profiles and you can see if these schedules have in-between values. In the SD wizard, the simplified schedules are either on or off, so of course we’re going to get different results because these schedules impact the electric meter directly. They also impact the HVAC, the cooling equipment, the fans, and the heating equipment.

That’s another main difference. The other main difference, and I think it’s a pretty powerful feature, that the DD wizard offers, is the use of zone groups. This is not available in the SD wizard, and it can be quite complicated, because we can create zone groups and assign them to various systems. Of course, if you’re not very knowledgeable about HVAC systems, this is pretty useless anyway, and thus, someone who does not need to know about zoning, certainly should not be using the DD wizard.

The question remains, then: which wizard is better? The answer to that question is, as always with building simulation: it depends. It depends on who the person doing the modeling is. If you’re doing a lead model, you should almost always start out with the DD wizard. But if you’re doing a quick simulation to figure out what’s better — what’s the better option, what’s the better system — anything that could be simulated in the SD wizard, you can do that much more quickly in the SD wizard than in the DD wizard.

So, basically we have several differences — and not just the differences of shells, which is the common answer we have. Of course, the DD wizard can create multiple shells. We can stack shells, and we can put them into different places — we can essentially model multiple buildings in the DD wizard, that’s the main difference that is typically cited. The other difference is the schedules, changed by default in the DD wizard, and the other main difference is zone groups and the power of zone groups. There’s a number of additional features that you can see throughout the DD wizard, but those are all on a per-system and per-screen basis.

We’ll go ahead and create a new SD wizard file. Let’s use the Hourly Enduse Profile and you’ll immediately see that you get 50 screens instead of 41. And now, we can model the additional schedules in the SD wizard, just like we did in the DD wizard. So, that’s one thing that the SD wizard can do that it does not do by default.

Personally, I think that if you are using specific schedules, you probably already have enough knowledge of eQUEST that you can use the DD wizard. However, if you want to do a quick run, and you know what you’re doing, go ahead and use the SD wizard.

Vamos a seguir adelante y abrir Equest.
