In this lesson we're going to cover and create a VAV fan curve. To understand more about curves, which is a concept in almost all stimulation programs, please watch the theoretical video on curves where we cover an example of this. For those of you who know what a curve is and are just wondering how to import it, we're going to cover that right now. Moreover, we're going to cover something that you're likely going to have to do-- importing the LEED fan curve for a VAV system. Let's say you have a VAV system set up.
You have to be in detailed mode, and we go under the air-side HVAC module. We have to navigate down to the performance curves. We can copy an existing curve if we knew exactly what we were doing, but I would recommend just right clicking on performance curves and click create curve fit. We're going to call this 90-1 VAV curve. We're going to create from scratch, and given that we know (from page 183 of 90.1 2007) the curve coefficients, there are four making it a cubic curve. Typically, for the input type, we want to select the curve coefficients if we have them. It's just easier to do it this way. We click done. Now we have curve coefficient one which, from the manual, is .0013. Coefficient two is .147. Coefficient three is .9506. Finally, .4 is -.0998. We can click done.
We've created the curve but that's actually not enough. We've created it but we haven't applied it to anything. We click done here and we have to go to the VAV system. We can double click if we're just changing one system. Go to the fans tab. There's two curves already specified but these are the defaults from eQUEST for a VAV system. The most conservative way to do this is to specify both curves, so we select the fan curve and I'm going to select 90-1 VAV curve. We're going to do that again for the return fan. We can do this for our other VAV systems and while you may not need to do this again because later we're going to cover how to import this curve into your files. You won't have to re-create it each time you need it in later files. Finally, remember that if we had multiple systems, it would be a good idea to select the fan curve in the spreadsheet view. However we only had two systems and we only had to change four fans.
