BEMP Exam

Hi Kristy & Omer,

I also had the same experience as Kristy when I took the BEMP exam.
Anything that I studied from the ASHRAE handbooks, or otherwise, turned
out to be non-applicable. What proved to be supportive of my passing the
BEMP exam was my direct experience as an energy modeler and the many years
of training and learning from continuous experience of
applying guidelines and creating energy models.

The exam itself was applied pressure under the time constraint to complete
the exam questions and the additional 15 questions that were not being
scored to the passing of the exam. These additional questions were noted
as "test questions". In my experience this exam is a very good measure of
those who are experienced with building successful and accurate energy
models against those who lack enough experience with energy modeling for
building design projects.

If you can build successful energy models for design or compliance purposes
then you should have no problems passing this exam.

Good luck on your exam!

Hi Pasha,

Thanks for the information. I have experience building LEED models, let's see if that will help.

I was wondering if there are questions on specific ASHRAE 90.1 topics, like for example which setpoints to use in the baseline. Or would the questions require
detailed knowledge of capacity and efficiency adjustment curves?

Best regards,

Omer Moltay

Hi Omer,

There wasn't any 90.1 specific questions because in the bigger picture of
the exam and modeling world, any Standard can be referenced for
establishing a baseline, and the exam was not biased towards ASHRAE
Standards themselves. Although I can't remember the questions
specifically, I can describe the approach a bit.

The questions were more of a "reasoning" style, it might be something like
".....the lighting energy is reduced, the cooling energy is reduced, and
the heating energy is increased....What type of ECM is being applied?"

Don't be fooled though, the questions were worded quite long (not short &
too the point), and they of course needed to be organized in your thoughts
for which information was actually needed to perform the calculations.

I would suggest that at a minimum you will need to know your basic Load
Design calculations (i.e. 1.085 x CFM x DeltaT) and others of that
nature.

If you know your design basics that contribute to the Whole Building
Science of sustainable design and thus energy simulation then you will be
prepared for the exam. It truly is an exam that measures experience and
knowledge from experience. This is why I respect this Certification very
much when it comes to Experienced Energy Modelers.

Cheers,
Pasha
