[TRNSYS-users] Editing TRNSYS 3D buildings

Last post

Hello,
After creating a multizone building using TRNSYS3d (in SketchUp Make 2016)
and successfully linking to it in Sim Studio, I can't figure out how to
edit the building in TRNSYS3d (i.e. create a new .idf file) and have my
existing Sim Studio model (looking for _b17.idf and .b17) see the new
building.

The "Update TRNSYS3D file" option in TRNBuild is grayed out.

Any hints?

Thanks,
Brian

Dear Brian,

just use the export function. It'll create an IDF file from your opened B7 file. The update function is for older files only, when not all information required for writing an IDF file were stored in the B17 file.

Attached you can find a short tutorial on how to import, export and reimport a 3D building project.

Best
Jakob

Thanks for your reply, Jacob. I have a few followup questions.

I was hoping there's a way to reimport a modified idf into an existing Sim
Studio model. The "New 3D Project Wizard" doesn't allow this - that I've
seen.

In TRNBuild I don't see the "File/Import TRNSYS3D file" option, unless I
have a blank TRNBuild - not already linked to a B17 file. So I'm not able
to import a modified idf???

The tutorial makes sense to import a modified idf into a new Sim Studio or
new TRNBuild. Is there a way to reimport into an existing model?

Also (last question) - you hinted that there's a "new" TRNSYS3D way. Also,
the tutorial hasn't referred to the *bldname*_b17.idf file that's created
during import into Sim Studio. Is this now obsolete? I've never understood
how this file could get updated. Can I only worry about the idf and b17
files?

OK - one last question. A screenshot in the tutorial shows a .b18
extension. I'm using 17. Might this make a difference?

Thanks for your time, Jacob.

Dear Brian,
as there were rising new questions, I tried to improve the tutorial ? you can find it attached.
Please contact me again if you still have further questions.

I?ll try to answer those questions that won?t be answered in the new tutorial in your text below in red color.

Best
Jakob

The tutorial makes sense to import a modified idf into a new Sim Studio or new TRNBuild. Is there a way to reimport into an existing model?
As the tutorial describes, exporting .b17 file to .idf file will make all the information out of .b17 file being included in the new .idf file. So if you reimport this new .idf file in TRNBuild and save it as a new .b17 file, all the modifications will be available.

Also (last question) - you hinted that there's a "new" TRNSYS3D way. Also, the tutorial hasn't referred to the bldname_b17.idf file that's created during import into Sim Studio.
You can ignore it ? it saves some changes and cleanings after importing into TRNBuild.
Is this now obsolete? I've never understood how this file could get updated. Can I only worry about the idf and b17 files?
Yes.

OK - one last question. A screenshot in the tutorial shows a .b18 extension. I'm using 17. Might this make a difference?
No.
