I wanted to ask about the following

a. In eQuest what does dimming 30% light (30% power) lighting control means?

b. Other dimming controls like dimming down to 5% light (21% power) has been explained to provide minimum dimming light 0.05 and require minimum power 0.21 but during day time how does the lighting and power requirements vary with this type of control for each light source? I mean with this control minimum lighting can go up to minimum 5% but in what steps will the dimming be done to eventually reach 5% light (21% power) during day time and then again increase light level when daylight is reducing??

c. Similar question for other types of dimming controls like down to 10% light, down to 20% light etc.

d. eQuest uses different types of lighting sources like sus. fluorescent etc, there must be some equations for these sources where can they be found?

"LIGHT-CTRL-TYPE1, LIGHT-CTRL-TYPE2

Takes code-words that specify the type of electric lighting control system
at LIGHT-REF-POINT1 and LIGHT-REF-POINT2, respectively

CONTINUOUS Specifies a dimming control system in which the
electric light output and power input decrease continuously and linearly as
the daylight illuminance increases. The control action at a daylighting
reference point is illustrated in Figure 19 in terms of power input fraction (power input divided by maximum power
input), as the daylight illuminance increases, and light output fraction
(electric light output divided by maximum electric light output).

Figure 19 shows that, as the daylight illuminance increases, the fractional light
output decreases from 1.0 (at zero daylight illuminance and maximum input
power) to a value MIN-LIGHT-FRAC at the minimum power fraction,
MIN-POWER-FRAC.

In the example shown in Figure 20
the lighting set point (LIGHT-SET-POINT1 or
2) is 45fc, MIN-POWER-FRAC is 0.3, and MIN-LIGHT-FRAC is 0.1. We see that at
zero daylight illuminance the electric lights are on at full power and the
electric illuminance is 50fc. As the daylighting illuminance increases, the
electric power and lighting decrease, reaching a power fraction of 0.3 and
an electric illuminance of 5fc (50 * (MIN-LIGHT-FRAC)) when the daylight
illuminance is 45 fc. Beyond this point, the electric power and illuminance
stay constant as the daylighting illuminance increases.

CONTINUOUS/OFF Gives a dimming control similar to CONTINUOUS but the
lights turn off completely (i.e., the electric light output and power are
zero) when the total illuminance (electric illuminance plus daylighting
illuminance) exceeds the lighting setpoint. The action is shown in Figure 21
.

STEPPED Specifies the control system shown in Figure 22
, in which power input and light output vary
in discrete, equally spaced steps. The number of steps (excluding zero) is
given by LIGHT-CTRL-STEPS.

DISCRETE Specifies the control system in which power input
and light output vary in discrete, variable spaced steps. The number of
steps is given by DISCRETE-POWER1 and its paired DISCRETE- LIGHT 1 for the
first control point, and DISCRETE-POWER2 and DISCRETE-LIGHT2 for the second
control point."

Thanks but still I am not satisfied regarding part a and d.
Part a says dimming 30% not down to 30%.
I simulated down to 5% , down to 20% and 30% dimming?(DoE 2 default) strategies.
The annual electricity consumption for dimming light down to 5% came the lowest, next 30% dimming ?followed by down to 20% dimming.

In part d i am looking for equations used for modeling different types of lamps.

I used EQuest maybe ten years ago. Maybe longer. Didn't use it much.
One LEED project that went bust and some Efficiency work at the utility
where I worked. But I joined this list quite a while ago because I use
another DOE 2 using software product called "EnergyPro". I sometimes
ask DOE 2 questions on this list and I try to help out if I know
something about what is being discussed, so I been around this list a while.

But wait...

Today one of my clients calls and wants me to do some EQuest runs. I
tell him I'm pretty rusty (I don't even have it installed any more) so
he goes off to find somebody else to do the work.

I HATE TO LOSE WORK!

So, I am asking this list...

Does anybody have an "EQuest for Dummies" link or FAQ or step[by-step
anything recommended for somebody coming back to EQuest, basically
starting from scratch installation and all the rest. I'd buy a book,
but I don't think there are any.

Any help is appreciated.

Hi Robert!

Much of the free resources have been put on the table. There are a few other scattered resources in the way of guides/articles/wiki's, but nothing you can't source through the mailing list archives as questions come up.

A for-cost option you maywant to consider, and particularly if you have a project/job opportunity in front of you that you don't want to pass up on, is allotting yourself a few extra days for the deadline (starting sooner, ideally), and hiring a "sub-consultant" to do the project alongside you while demonstrating/explaining/training you over the course of the project.

If that's of interest, you can leverage the mailing list archives to identify and reach out to individuals you know to be knowledgeable/experienced with challenges specific to your project, or you could more simply post a request detailing what you're looking for and see who replies.

I know a number of us who regularly participate on these lists will respond positively to such a request as our individual schedules permit. If you are looking for someone to travel to you for face-to-face training, I know Pasha Korber-Gonzales is very experienced in this niche, is in high demand, and has no shortage of satisfied customers for references.

I have made myself available on occasion to act as a sub-consultant for fellow modelers & designers when a particularly complex/massive/daunting project comes along, whereupon I can take on an assistive or 'turn-key' role for energy model development and documentation.

If you are shopping around for training with names you aren't familiar with - that's probably the best advice I can offer however: look for references. There are some really smart & capable individuals out there who simply don't make for great teachers, and I have heard laments of more than one case gone sour in this department.
