Professional Education Seminar (PES)
Topic: Building Energy Modeling with an expert panel that includes energy modeling experts, design engineers and a commissioning agent and offers 2.5 PDH credits

The Value of Energy Modeling

Modeling is critical to HOK's mission and a key tool in maintaining the firm's global standing as a high-performance leader. HOK sees modeling as a mechanism for shifting investment from a building's active, mechanical systems to its passive, architectural elements, benefiting not only energy-efficiency, but also durability and aesthetics. Building energy modeling (BEM) is not a traditional ECM as it doesn't directly save energy. However, by guiding selection and combination of direct ECMs, BEM is actually one of the most cost-effective ECMs. This presentation highlights the ROI of BEM, testimonials from project managers who use BEM to great effect and review options and resources for engaging with BEM early and often, and case studies of BEM application.

The Development of RAPMOD and its Application in Buildings

RAPMOD is a new wearable technology developed by UC Berkeley and Indoor Reality using ARPAe funding. RAPMOD is worn like a backpack and allows the user to walk through a building to collect essential energy-related data. From this walk-through, the system collects data required for an energy model of the building using laser scanners, infrared scanners and cameras and converts these data into .idf format for use in EnergyPlus. The energy model includes the geometry of interior and exterior surfaces, window U-values, lighting levels, equipment levels and occupancy for each room. RAPMOD will be extended to include HVAC recognition in a subsequent phase of development. The main goal is to reduce the cost and skill level required to create energy simulation models for deep retrofit assessments, energy audits and retro commissioning for existing buildings through rapid and accurate energy model creation. The presentation will also describe the testing of this technology and the applications such as the Smart Energy Assessment Calculator (SEAC) that can be used in conjunction with the data received to quickly benchmark a building, model efficiency measures and understand what savings these would provide.

-Speakers: Dru Crawley, Vanessa Hostick, and Annie Marston

-Panel Moderator: Roger Chang

Speaker and Moderator Biographies

Drury Crawley, Ph. D., FASHRAE, BEMP, FIBPSA, AIA - Bentley Systems

[http://nccashrae.org/images/dru.jpg]Dru Crawley is Bentley Fellow and Director, Building Performance focusing on building performance, design, BIM, energy efficiency, renewable energy, net-zero-energy buildings, interoperability, sustainability and resilience. Before joining Bentley in 2010, he developed, launched and managed EnergyPlus development and the USDOE's Commercial Buildings Initiative (now Better Buildings Initiative and Alliances) promoting creation of low- and net-zero-energy buildings. He has more than 35 years of experience in building performance, energy efficiency, renewable energy, and sustainability. He received his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland where his doctoral thesis focused on building simulation as a policy tool, looking at the potential impact of climate change on the built environment. He has a Bachelor of Architecture from University of Tennessee and is a registered architect.

Dr. Crawley is an active member in ASHRAE (Fellow in 2009; Exceptional Service Award in 2013; BEMP certification in 2012 and member and chair of numerous technical and standards committees), USGBC, IBPSA, AIA, and CIBSE. He has published more than 125 papers and articles, testified before the U.S. Congress, lectured at more than 20 universities, and made more than 400 presentations on building performance, energy efficiency, sustainability, and renewable energy throughout the world.

Vanessa Hostick, LEED AP EB:O+M - HOK

In her position of Sustainable Design Specialist at HOK, Vanessa works to improve the design, planning, and construction of projects through resource management and design analysis. She works directly with clients and project teams to help guide their application of sustainable best practices in all phases of design and construction for a variety of projects types and sizes. She also has experience with existing building O&M, life cycle analysis, green policy writing and implementation, energy optimization and LEED Certification.

Annie Marston, Ph.D., LEED AP, BEMP - Head of the Building Performance Group - Baumann Consulting

[http://nccashrae.org/images/annie.jpg]Annie currently serves as the Head of the Building Performance Group at Baumann Consulting. She is an expert in energy modeling, CFD modeling and daylight modeling. Annie has extensive experience with energy modeling, including over 50 energy models for LEED projects throughout the world, ranging from Certified to Platinum. Additionally, she also conducts parametric studies for conceptual design work and consults on energy efficient solutions for high-profile projects. Annie uses simulation to inform decisions for community energy plans to achieve energy consumption reduction goals for entire cities and counties by 30-50%. Annie is BEMP and LEED AP certified and has a Ph.D. in Renewable Energy and Architecture from the University of Nottingham.

Roger Chang, PE, Assoc. AIA, BEMP, LEED Fellow, GGP - Principal and Regional Engineering Director - DLR Group | Westlake Reed

Roger Chang is a principal and regional engineering director for DLR Group | Westlake Reed Leskosky (www.dlrgroup.com), a national integrated design firm. Roger has worked with a diverse mix of higher education, healthcare, cultural, and government clients, including the Smithsonian, GSA, Library of Congress, Virginia Tech, and the Cleveland Clinic. He has taught at both the Catholic University of America School of Architecture and the Pratt Institute. Mr. Chang was a member of the DC Mayor's Task Force on Building Energy Performance Standards and is a voting member of the DC Energy and Green Technical Advisory Group. He founded the IBPSA National Capital Chapter in 2010 and is the current ASHRAE NCC Government Activities chair. He is a mechanical engineering graduate of MIT and a licensed professional engineer.

Dinner Presentation
Topic: ASHRAE Headquarters Renovation

-Speaker: Ronald E. Jarnagin

When ASHRAE decided to renovate their aging headquarters building it was faced with the challenge of trying to live up to their reputation as a leader in the built environment. There were many opinions about what should be done and a small committee was formed to serve as the owner's representatives to oversee the renovation. This presentation will focus on the process we followed, what we decided and why, what went wrong and what went right, lessons learned, actual costs of the project and actual measured energy savings achieved. You will find this presentation both entertaining and educational! See you there!
