1. The Shockingly Short Payback of Energy Modeling - Speaker Anica Landreneau, director of global sustainability consulting at HOK.
Presentation Description: In case you missed the presentation at the Better Buildings Summit held at the US Department of Energy in May, Anica Landreneau of HOK will be giving an updated version of the presentation that led to the article "The Shockingly Short Payback of Energy Modeling" (http://energy.gov/eere/buildings/articles/shockingly-short-payback-energy-modeling). Modeling is critical to HOK's mission and a key tool in maintaining the firm's global standing as a high-performance leader. HOK sees modeling as a mechanism for shifting investment from a building's active, mechanical systems to its passive, architectural elements, benefiting not only energy-efficiency, but also durability and aesthetics. Building energy modeling (BEM) is not a traditional ECM as it doesn't directly save energy. However, by guiding selection and combination of direct ECMs, BEM is actually one of the most cost-effective ECMs. This presentation highlights the ROI of BEM, testimonials from project managers who use BEM to great effect and review options and resources for engaging with BEM early and often, and case studies of BEM application on local Washington DC projects.
2. RAPMOD - Automated building of energy models for existing buildings - Speaker Annie Marston, head of building performance at Baumann Consulting.
Presentation Description: RAPMOD in its current form has been in development over the last 3 years. However, the concept and technology have been worked on by University of California Berkeley for the last decade. RAPMOD is a wearable technology that allows the user while walking through a building to create a comprehensive 3D virtual environment of the building, as well as automatically creating an idf energy model including all geometry, windows, lighting levels, equipment levels and occupancy estimates. The technology allows the rapid creation of an energy model with minimal input (HVAC) from the modeler, freeing up time for analysis and experimentation.
About the Speakers:
Anica Landreneau
Bio: As Global Sustainable Consulting Director located in HOK's Washington, DC office, Ms. Landreneau manages the successful development and implementation of sustainability goals on local and worldwide projects. Ms. Landreneau has been an expert on applying sustainable best practice guidelines and the building certification process under the U.S. Green Building Council's various LEED Rating Systems as well as global sustainability standards for over 12 years. Ms. Landreneau works with both public and private sectors clients on campus and master planning, individual buildings and entire real estate portfolios, including existing building stock.
Ms. Landreneau served as a technical advisor for Washington, DC's International Green Construction Code passage in 2014, and continues to serve in this capacity. She continues to serve on national committees for energy analysis and green building codes for the American Institute of Architects. Ms. Landreneau co-authored with the US General Services Administration The New Sustainable Frontier: Principles of Sustainable Development and led the research and authorship of Sustainable Urban Planning Guidelines for New Growth in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Annie Marston
Bio: Annie Marston joined Baumann Consulting in 2008, where she serves as the Head of the Building Performance Group. Annie is an expert in energy modeling and related simulation applications including CFD and daylight modeling, energy simulations for LEED certification projects, parametric studies during conceptual design to select the most energy efficient solutions, and energy consumption modeling on the scale of whole cities and counties for Integrated Energy Master Plans (IEMPs). Annie is proficient in various modeling and simulation programs and related applications, including EnergyPlus, DesignBuilder, Google SketchUp, IES, Ecotect, Radiance, Star CCM+, FLUENT, and others. She is also familiar working with EQuest, TRNSYS, and Trane Trace.
The author of numerous papers and presentations, Annie has spoken at various industry conferences including ASHRAE's Energy Modeling and High Performance Building Conferences and SimBuild. She also teaches EnergyPlus to graduate students at the Catholic University of America and serves as the Vice President of the Washington, D.C. chapter of IBPSA. Annie holds a Master's of Mathematics from St. Andrews University (2002) and a Master's of Science in Renewable Energy and Architecture from the University of Nottingham (2005). Annie earned her Ph.D. with a focus on the Built Environment from the University of Nottingham in 2008.
