This can be fixed without re-opening the file. If you right click in the
black area and select "Reset Camera" and then change to a different input
category using the buttons at the top of the screen and back again, your
view will be restored. This assumes that you are not in a wizard at the
time.
Before you try to re-open the model try this first:
1) "Reset Camera"
2) Change from the Building Shell tab to any of the other tabs and then
click back into the Building Shell tab.
3) "Reset Camera" again.
When you lose the 3D view, save the model, then reopen it. You may have
to right click on the screen and select "Reset camera".
