Green Roofs: Policy + Simulation
On November 7, 2017, the citizens of Denver passed the Denver Green Roof
Initiative
25,000 square feet to dedicate a percentage of it's roof to green,
vegetative space. For this SimClub event, we have invited Jill Jennings
Golich from the City of Denver to discuss the policy details of this
initiative, as well as Professor Paulo Tabares to discuss the technical
issues of simulating green roofs in building energy models. This
includes the heat and transfer mechanisms modeled, the impacts to building
energy consumption, assumptions, simulation gaps, validation variables and
climate conditions, as well as recommended future work.
------------------------------
Jill Jennings Golich has a bachelor?s degree from the University of Denver,
and a Master?s in Public Administration from the University of Washington.
Jill started her career with CRL Associates in their Development Services
division, and then moved to Design Workshop where she led the entitlement
effort for the Denargo Market project off Brighton Boulevard.
eventually serving as the Director of Campus Planning. Since April 2014,
Jill has served as one of the Deputy Directors for the City of Denver?s
Community Planning and Development Department. In this position, Jill led
the successful adoption of the 2015 International Codes, serves as point
person for CPD related to regulation of the marijuana industry, and is
leading implementation of the voter passed green roof initiative.

Dr. Paulo Cesar Tabares-Velasco is an Assistant Professor in the Department
of Mechanical Engineering at Colorado School of Mines. His research
interests are in building energy simulation, thermal storage, smart
materials, heat and mass transfer applied to buildings and building
integration with smart grid. Before joining CSM, Dr. Tabares-Velasco was a
Research Engineer at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) where
he was a developer of NREL?s building simulation/optimization tool BEopt
and led NREL technical research on phase change materials in collaboration.
Prior to NREL, Paulo was a Research Assistant at the Pennsylvania State
University (PSU) where he developed a new apparatus to test the thermal
performance of vegetated roofs under control conditions. He also developed
a new heat and mass transfer model for vegetated roof systems. Paulo?s work
on vegetated roofs has been recognized with the 2009 Crosby Field Award,
2009 Willis H. Carrier Award and 2009 Best Poster Award by the American
Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE),
the 2011 Green Roof Research Award of Excellence by Green Roof for Healthy
Cities (GRHC) and a NSF video production.
