ASHRAE Standard 205P: Formats for Building Services Equipment Performance Data
A long-standing issue in the building simulation field is the paucity of part load and off-design performance information for HVAC and other building services equipment. Detailed data are often difficult to obtain and frequently require manual reformatting. Standard ratings do not provide information for the full range of operating conditions. Given these barriers, modelers commonly use defaults and/or built-in correlations when constructing equipment models. Yet accurate modeling of actual equipment is more important than ever, given regulatory and market pressure for low-energy buildings, not to mention emerging applications such as microgrid optimization.
ASHRAE Standard 205P, Representation of Performance Data for HVAC&R and Other Facility Equipment is an important effort to support automated transfer of full performance data from manufacturers to modeling software. The 205P project committee consists of equipment vendors, software developers, and simulation users. Under ASHRAE?s consensus process, stakeholders strive to understand each other?s requirements and work to devise data schemes acceptable to all. Standard 205P has recently completed its third public review; publication is expected in 2022.
The talk will discuss weaknesses of ratings for the simulation application, then describe Standard 205P, its development history, and current status. The saga is instructive, given that comparable effort will be required across the entire industry to realize BIM and other interoperable systems.
