HOW WE'RE DIFFERENT
Though we're still a relatively small firm, we compete and win against much larger firms who now offer sustainable and green design. We differ from the others in our commitment and focus - we're passionate about sustainable design. We basically want to effect a fundamental change in building practices, one project at a time. Our founder, Peter Rumsey, is well known locally and nationally as a leading proponent of sustainable and energy efficient design. All of our projects have a green, sustainable, or energy efficient focus.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
The qualities we're looking for in new team members are: passion; curiosity; willingness to constantly learn about sustainable design; an understanding of clients' needs and budgetary restraints; technical skills; familiarity with the latest design tools and HVAC and plumbing solutions; and a desire to make a contribution to the bigger picture.
A CREATIVE SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENT
Our new offices, located in downtown Oakland, in a 1930s Art Deco building, demonstrate our commitment to designing practical, affordable, and highly resource-efficient buildings. We designed the TI retrofit to a LEED Platinum standard, and submitted for 102 out of a possible 110 points. The highly energy efficient design resulted in a 37% overall reduction in annual energy use compared to a typical office building ,while meeting or exceeding all of the requirements of our staff in terms of comfort and reliability. We brought the project in at a very low cost of $25/sf and achieved a 37% total energy reduction with a high-efficiency mechanical system and a careful lighting retrofit. Reducing maintenance requirements was a key part of the design, and resulted in improved reliability and efficient system operation. We're an environmentally conscious office, offering indoor bike parking, a free bike maintenance program for all employees, composting, recycling of over half a dozen different items, and we are located within walking distance to BART and several modes of public transportation. Take a video tour of our office on our website.
