Sustainable Building Daylight Advisor

Disciplines range from large-scale urban planning, to architecture, interiors and industrial design. The Vancouver office is growing, currently staffed with more than 90 professionals, and the bench strength of more than 1,500 staff and 25 offices globally.

Our Vancouver office seeks a sustainable building and daylighting specialist with a minimum of 5 years professional experience to perform daylighting, solar control, and design option analysis of our projects. This individual will serve as part of the Vancouver office's Research and Sustainable Building Advisory team, and participate as part of our integrated design teams, helping inform design choices to optimize daylighting performance and occupant comfort while minimizing building energy loads. This function will allow the highest level of interaction with design teams, especially at the earliest phases of a project, and will complement, not replace, additional types of modeling performed by project consultants.

Major Responsibilities

? Conduct solar and shadow analysis of buildings and master plan massing studies.

? Perform building daylight simulations to support early design decisions and the relative impact on lighting, human comfort and building energy loads.

? Investigate and analyze building daylighting strategies, fa?ade design options, skylight optimization, glazing performance specifications, interior and exterior glare control strategies, and lighting systems integration.

? Work collaboratively with architectural teams and related consultants on building design strategies and translate technical outputs from simulations to practical design applications.

? Support the office's research initiatives, stay involved in software developments, and provide recommendations on best practice integration between software platforms.

Qualifications

? Minimum of 5 years' experience in the architectural and engineering industry.

? Engineering Degree or Architectural Degree with demonstrated technical experience.

? A solid understanding of various daylighting metrics and their applications such as daylight factor, daylight autonomy, annual sunlight exposure, useful daylight illuminance, and glare probability.

? At a minimum, demonstrated direct experience in daylight modeling analysis and experience with leading software packages such as: Radiance, DIVA, DAYSIM, TRNSYS, IES, Ecotect.

? Experience with Rhino/Grasshopper is an asset.

? Experience with energy modeling software such as IES, eQUEST, and/or EnergyPlus is an asset.

? An ability to use REVIT/Sketchup and CAD drawings as tools for analysis and daylight modeling inputs, and understanding of software interoperability.

? An understanding of codes and standards related to daylight and lighting design, and performance metrics such as: ASHRAE, IES, NECB 11 and LEED.

? Demonstrated experience with sustainable building design.

? A solid understanding of building construction and environmental science.

? An ability to read and understand project specifications and drawings.

? Be a LEED Accredited Professional.

? Demonstrate proficiency with the US and Canadian LEED Green Building Rating System and Living Building Challenge.

? Ability to conduct self-directed research and analysis with limited degree of supervision.

? Have strong oral and written communication skills, and an ability to communicate technical results graphically to architectural project teams.

? Ability to travel in Canada, United States and internationally.
