BDL Error Trouble Shooting

Good Afternoon All,

I am working on my first eQuest Energy Model and am quickly feeling
overwhelmed. Was able to build the shell in the wizard and assign shell
properties (excluding doors and windows as noted in tutorial to add in
detailed mode) and was successful with only 4 errors.

The problem is that when I started adding in the HVAC chilled water
components without zoning them it generated 34,000 errors. I then scrapped
that work and started over with one floor (which has 5 systems) and I
properly zoned it and it generated 51,000 errors.

This is a 6 story hospital that was added on over many years. At this point
my main question is what is best way to trouble shoot? It seems that once I
close the BDL Error Screen I do not have a way of going back in without
re-generating which takes 8-10 minutes to see the errors AND I don't see a
way to drill down on the errors to try to resolve. I am sure many of them
are inter-related but I dont even know where to start.

I am glad to have found this group because I have contacted eQuest with no
response and their Forum that I bought a 4 month subscription to is
basically worthless (no one responds). I know every one is slammed but any
and all help would be greatly appreciated as I think this is a field that I
may stay in for awhile.

Jill,

If you want people to help,
It' be helpful to share the files themselves or at least what errors you are getting so it gets specific enough for people to advise.

By what you are saying (8-10 min to run it) I would tend to postulate you created way more zones than necessary even given the fact that hospital are large buildings. (Or you could have an antique computer)

Best,
Julien

Hi Jill,
Sharing your BDL and inp files will help figure out the issues.

I believe the issue is more with how the eQuest interface handles the BDL error window. When you close that window, eQuest attempts to fix the BDL errors which is what hangs the system. One solution is to leave that BDL error window open. Then open the .BDL file with a text editor. Search for ERROR to determine what errors are included.

If you close the window, eQuest removes the offending lines from the .INP file and removes the ERROR statements from the .BLD file making it hard to determine exactly is going on.

If I come across a file with a large number of errors I typically move the .INP file to my DOE22 command line installation and do the debugging by fixing each error one at a time. Once the errors are fixed, I move the .INP file back to the eQuest location and open the .PD2 file and continue.
