3-1 Space Naming

One of the most cumbersome, and yet most important, tasks that you can do in detailed edit is name the spaces. This is cumbersome not just to name the spaces, but you have to remember that you also need to name both the plenums and, along with the plenums, you also need to name all of the zones. Of course, they correspond with each other, so that the entering of the names is sort of redundant — in fact, it’s entirely redundant.

I would encourage you to use a tool at energymodels.com that’s free to the general public. Basically, you enter the space names and not the plenums or zones, and you run this through this online tool from the .imp file, and it gives you a .imp file where the plenums and the zone names are based off of the space names.

Let’s go ahead and look at how we would enter the space names themselves. A common way is to have the building drawings in front of you, and look at the 2D view. Select “properties,” look at your drawings, and rename that from here. As I go through that, I would cross off the room on my paper copy with a highlighter to indicate that I’ve already accounted for it, so that I could move along, as eQUEST won’t tell you which names you’ve already entered on your 2D geometry.

A better way to do this is through the spreadsheet view. Spreadsheet view is really neat because it lets you sort based on any of these categories. For instance, it’ll sort on area from largest to smallest. It just so happens that it’s pretty common to be able to get your spaces in spreadsheet format, and within spreadsheet you can also sort the space names, and you can sort them by their area. We’ve kept this simple for you. Using a spreadsheet, we can go ahead and look at these side by side. We can scroll over to see the area. We don’t have a room that’s 16,000 square feet, but we also notice that this is a plenum, and thus we’re not going to name it.

The first room is the largest room; it’s Mech Equip A317.

Now we have two rooms that are exactly the same size. We can always verify this in 2D view. We go to plenum, and this is 1533. You have to be careful how you have this sorted. Sometimes it automatically sorts from top to bottom every time you hit return, and if you’re struggling against this, just go to the opposite side and keep naming from the bottom up, as we had started with originally. Now we’re naming from the top down. It’s just the nature of eQUEST. Even if you’re constantly having to re-sort by area, it’s still faster than using the 2D view.

You get the picture here, and we’ll go ahead and name the rest of these spaces. You can do this for practice. Again, if you want to use the space re-namer, more power to you. Good luck naming all of these spaces. Remember, even though this is cumbersome, this is how you get to know your building. If you do have some confusion, you can always go back in to the 2D geometry. Find the space that you named. If this is indeed the lab, you check with your drawings. Otherwise, because we had these two spaces that had the exact same square footage, we might need to switch them.
