I am in the process of modelling a multi story building using eQUEST. I
would like to get your opinion on the followings.
1. The building has extended open balconies in each floor where this space
can be used by occupants. Can I consider distributing windows for the base
case as indicated in Appendix G, neglecting balconies?
2. The building also has a recessed unconditioned occupying zone in one of
the intermidiate floors. How should one consider this space in distributing
windows for the base case. How should the windows spread on the exterior
surface? exclude recesses zone and place them on the exterior wall or spread
continously as other zones including the recessed zone

Hi Anura,
Trying to visualize all of this is at least as difficult as it was for you
to try to write a description! If you zipped up your .inp and .pd2 files
together, however, and sent them to us you'd have a much better chance of
getting some help.

Your baseline can "neglect" the balconies if you are considering them
fixed shading devices (I would if they aren't enclosed spaces)- this
isn't uncommon for building projections in hotels/apartments and the
like.
To both inquiries - how you're to distribute baseline model windows when
your WWR is >40% is worded differently depending on whether you're under
90.1-2004 or 2007. Whether a space is conditioned or occupied has no
bearing on how you should distribute fenestrations.
Assuming you are under 40% gross WWR, simply use the same window
distribution on your baseline as is used in the proposed model (i.e.
don't try to re-locate the windows).
If your gross WWR is >40%, the options you have available to you depend
on how Appendix Table G.3.1.5.c. is worded. 2007 tells you to use the
same proportions on each orientation as the proposed, and 2004 tells you
to use uniform bands distributed equally on all faces.
If you were so inclined, you could define uniform bands representing the
same per-orientation proportions under 2007, but to me that seems a
laborious route that's potentially disadvantageous to your performance
rating. I've attached a discussion from a few weeks ago outlines
exactly how I'd deal with a WWR > 40%, if you're interested in a
step-by-step.
