Natural Ventilation Modelling

Hi,

We use eQuest for our energy models. We are now faced with a project
where we would like to know the effect of stack-effect natural
ventilation in a 5 storey building and how it can help us undersize the
mechanical equipment, especially due to night cooling of the concrete
structure. Further, we would like to use the same modelling for LEED
compliance. eQuest seems insufficient for this. What is the recommended
practice for this?

Hi Mimta,

For natural ventilation. I will recommend IES VE. It has tow modules,
MacroFlo and MicroFlo (CFD), which are able to address your specific
requirements at different scales. I've used both modules quite often to
solve particular ventilation (both natural and mechanical
ventilation) issues. TAS and Energy Plus may be able to do the same thing
but I've never used them for ventilation analysis.

Hi ?mer,

EnergyPlus has an module called airflow network, that works wich pressure
nodes and ventillation pathways. It`s not a CFD but for the purpose you will
use I think its even more appropriated than a CFD software. You can learn

We did use LoopDa with good result and it is free
at :
http://www.bfrl.nist.gov/IAQanalysis/software/LOOPDAdownload1.htm

We try Energy+ but it is hard to use and there is a lot of parameter to adjust.

Circling back to Omer's question. Even though IES and EnergyPlus provide
better representations of the type of building physics he is trying to
simulate, what are some examples of eQUEST approximations? What about a
combination of stacked zones with Sherman-Grimsrud OA parameters set up?
Since comfort throughout the space is not being analyzed, only energy
approximations.

Hi Martin,

Can you please explain a little more what do you mean by "good result"?
I suppose you must have been benchmarked the result with another model?
