VAV System - high cooling energy in winter

Hi,

I?m trying to model an existing building with a chilled water VAV system.
The chilled water usage is much higher in the winter time than expected.
Is this a common issue? Does anyone have any suggestions for fixing this?
My files are attached.

You have the cooling control set at constant ? do you know if the existing building has a sequence of operation to follow?

For a recent new building which had a VAV air handler with a chilled water coil (water delivered from an aquifer in this case, VFD drives, etc.) I used the below parameters, which appear to have a large effect on your model.

An aside: any PD2 file opened in notepad or similar text editors will clarify which version of eQuest was used to create it in the first few lines.

In this case, 3.65:

I?ve tried adjusting the schedules and that made little difference, the
building is still heating and cooling 8,760 hours per year. Also, I?ve
tried eliminating the plug loads and that also made no difference.

Hi Mike,

Looks like you are using the same schedules for both heating and cooling,
and I would take a look at that.

Another item could be your heavy plug loads.

Cheers,

Umesh

Mike,

I can?t open your file because I uninstalled 3-65, but I suggest you check the economizer low limit. A common cause I have encountered for winter cooling is due to the economizer low limit. The common default is for the economizer to shut off when the temperature drops below 45F (which is pretty ridiculous in my opinion), so the model turns on a compressor to do any cooling when it?s colder than 45F outside (which is most of the winter here in Wisconsin!). To remove the low limit, right-click on the number in the field (the red ?45?) and select ?Restore Default.? The field will then be blank?no low limit. Even though the text is red, it is not a user-entered value.

I ran a report to look at the supply air temps from the AHU?s and here is
what I have in the first hour of the year:

back up to 59F. Anyone have any ideas as to why this might be happening?
I can?t seem to figure this out.

I ran a report to look at the supply air temps from the AHU?s and here is
what I have in the first hour of the year:

back up to 59F. Anyone have any ideas as to why this might be happening?
I can?t seem to figure this out.

Thanks,

Have you tried resetting chilled and hot water temperatures? Also, how much
of your load is outside air?

It looks like this did the trick ? thank you!

You have the cooling control set at constant ? do you know if the existing
building has a sequence of operation to follow?

For a recent new building which had a VAV air handler with a chilled water
coil (water delivered from an aquifer in this case, VFD drives, etc.) I
used the below parameters, which appear to have a large effect on your
model.

Hi,

I?m trying to model an existing building with a chilled water VAV system.
The chilled water usage is much higher in the winter time than expected.
Is this a common issue? Does anyone have any suggestions for fixing this?
My files are attached.

Maybe check the humidity controls. It is possible the dewpoint is set such that 51F is required to remove moisture from the air.
