Hello all,
The government of Canada seems to have updated their engineering climate data sets to be used for energy simulations. The new data sets can be found here:
http://climate.weather.gc.ca/prods_servs/engineering_e.html
I quickly compared a CWEC file available from the doe2 website with the latest CWEC_V_2016 file from the website above for the same city and sure enough the number of heating degree days have been reduced and cooling degree days have gone up.
The issue I have with these files is I can?t seem to determine what years they are based on. The text files available on their ftp site are outdated (they maintain the CWEC files are based on data from 1960-1989), and the descriptions on the website are ambiguous.
Given the recent flurry of activity on weather files, I figured someone would be able to answer this pretty quickly!

Appendices D and E at the end), the periods of record vary from place to place, but most
end in 1989.

Thanks for the swift reply.
Indeed, this was the documentation I was referring to in my email. The documentation was published in 2008 whereas the CWEC files were uploaded to their ftp site in July 2017. I had a feeling they simply did not update the documentation when they updated the CWEC files so I wanted to confirm the dates used directly in the files somehow. Is this not possible?

Select ?Canadian Weather Year for Energy Calculation (CWEC) to get to the site with the weather files:
ftp://ftp.tor.ec.gc.ca/Pub/Engineering_Climate_Dataset/Canadian_Weather_year_for_Energy_Calculation_CWEC/ENGLISH/
The release notes haven?t been updated to reflect the latest set of CWEC files. Select CWEC_v_2016.
In the zip file for each province is the latest set of CWEC files in pairs ? the .epw file and the .wy3 file. The .wy3 file lists the year used for each month of data. For example, the Charlottetown, PEI file uses data from 1999 to 2013.

I opened the .epw files but didn?t bother checking the wy3 files for the dates as I figured they were identical. This confirms my theory that the documentation is not up to date!

It's just occurred to me that you were asking for the periods of record
for the NEW CWEC, whereas I thought you were asking about the earlier
CWEC2!
I haven't looked at the new CWEC, but the epw format should also so the
years for each historical month.? Having said that, looking at the years
on the files does not give you an accurate reading of the period of record.
