Hi, Does anybdy know how can you add PV energy to energy model ?... as base utility? I?m looking into credits NC-v2.2 EAc2 Onsite Renewable energy and they want the percentage based on the energy model rate and annual energy cost. How should I model it? Regards, Karen Smith

Hi Karen,

If it was me, I would just use PVWatts (http://www.nrel.gov/rredc/pvwatts/
) and then apply the energy savings to the output of TRACE in a
spreadsheet. However, the only way that I know how to model it directly
within TRACE is by following the instructions on this website,
http://energy-models.com/downloads/trace-700-solar-panel-estimator.

Hi Karen,

I think the basic procedure is you use your EAc1 energy model's final cost and consumption figures to work out the averaged "rate" for electricity (LEED-2009 EAp2 templates assemble this algebra towards the end, can't recall if the 2.2 templates do the same), and that figure is used to work out the value of the savings accounted under EAc2. I would start with the EAc2 template and documentation so far as the overall procedure is concerned.

That said, from my (limited) experience and the input of others on this list, PV can be explicitly modeled within eQuest model but is probably most easily approached if you start with some outside task-specific software to determine the amount of power you expect to be generated. This gives you something to calibrate against without earning a PhD in photovoltaic minutiae. Kinda similar to geothermal well fields in that regard. I think the RETscreen spreadsheets are among of the series of tools that have been suggested to this end (more in the archives).

That said as well, to get started back in your model: Navigate in detailed mode to utility+economics tab --> component tree --> right click "Project" at the top --> Create Photovoltaic Module...
Your help documentation starts here (and probably ends up in the onebuilding archives): Volume 2: Dictionary > HVAC Components > PV-MODULE

Best regards,

~Nick
