Hello All,
I am doing an Appendix G model for a warehouse building that has a
semi-heated space for freeze protection only by using infrared heaters. But
it is a 35,000 SFT warehouse building and if I go by Table G3.1.1A the
system type to be used will be System 5 Packaged VAV with Reheat in the
Baseline 90.1 model and I would have infrared radiant heaters in the
proposed model. Should I use the same system type in both Baseline and
Proposed model i.e. infrared radiant heaters with same efficiencies and
temperature setpoints or can the Baseline system be Packaged VAV with
Reheat and infrared radaint heaters in the proposed model ?
Thank You

I think your Baseline HVAC system should be System #9 or #10

Jim,
Thank for sending this info. Actually ASHRAE 90.1-2007 code did not have
this option for semi heated spaces which I was using for a 179d project.
This makes sense.
Thank You

Hi Syed,
The baseline system types are only applicable to conditioned portions of the building (hence why exception a) to Section G3.1.1 uses the term conditioned floor area). Therefore, since you indicate that the Proposed design is semiheated for freeze protection only (you should double check the definition of semiheated space in the Section 3.2 definitions though), the Baseline System would be modeled as heating only of the same type as the proposed, but you can take credit for any efficiency improvements if applicable.

Hi Alex,
Ok, I see. Thanks for sending this info. Yes it all points to modelling the
same heating system in baseline and proposed and efficiency improvements or
credits for infrared heaters can be taken into account.
Thank You
