Description: Many project teams consider energy models as simply a tool for meeting LEED's Energy and Atmosphere prerequisite, and obtaining credits towards LEED certification. Energy modelers develop models often with the simple mandate of achieving compliance. This approach misses one of the major benefits of developing a detailed whole building energy model: to inform the design process and guide the design team towards decisions that reduce overall energy consumption in a building. In this panel presentation, we will hear about LEED v4's new integrative process, which encourages design teams to use the energy model to have a dialogue about a building's energy consuming systems earlier in the design process. We will also hear about ASHRAE Standard Project Committee 209, currently under development, which is looking to set minimum standards and requirements to facilitate the energy model development process.
