Heat gain from children

Dear all,

I am trying to model a nursery school. I was wondering if there are any norms or any research papers that talk about the internal heat gain (in watts) from children of various ages.

Thank you in advance,

you might try searching the CDC website.

https://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/csem/csem.asp?csem=27&po=9

/"Younger children have higher respiratory rates than adults. They
therefore absorb more air contaminants per unit of weight: they
therefore experience a higher inhaled dose."

ASHRAE Fundamentals 2017 Chapter 18.4 Table 1 gives representative rates of sensible and latent heat based on activity. Note a below the table says to use 75% of the heat for an adult male for a child. More detailed info is in chapter 9 on thermal comfort.

Alexandra,

I don't have a copy right now, but I seem to remember that the ASHRAE Load
Calculations manual has heat gain for various ages.

Originally ran into values for children in an old Carrier load calc manual
that I think referenced ASHRAE.

As a quick approximation, I'd use the ratio of child caloric intake to
adult caloric intake and assume the ratio of heat gains is the same. So
ASHRAE might say 75% for children on the whole, but you could probably find
better data on caloric intake by age range and adjust accordingly -- I bet
my 8 year old eats 75% of what I do, with the 5 year old and 2 year old
eating more like 50% of what I do, but that's just a guess.

I like this line of thinking: energy in = energy out.

Then again my 6 month old is spitting out all the solids we try to feed her on a daily basis? new form of heat rejection? =)
