Hello,
I am trying to convert real time hourly weather files (taken from the
energyplus request site) into a .bin file to use in eQuest. I have been
referencing the instructions:
http://bepan.info/yahoo_site_admin/assets/docs/7_-_Customizing_eQUEST_Weathe
r_Data_by_Jeff_Hirsch.138125735.pdf
However, the instructions refer to an excel document that I cannot find. I
did find one here (Item 12):
http://bepan.info/weather
But I am not sure if this will work. Does anyone have an easier approach?
Any advice would be much appreciated!
Thanks,
Christina
Instructions:
http://bepan.info/weather
9 - Weather _NCDC.tpe to DOE2.bin to Tables-Charts
Download and substitute in 11 or 12 (change the location name in sheet 1 - does not change automatically)
11 - Template - Shanghai ? DOE2-Weather-Analysis - Short
12 - Template - Beijing ? DOE2-Weather-Analysis - Long

Thanks for the quick response, Varkie. However, I need a format that I can
get for free. I requested the real time weather files from
http://apps1.eere.energy.gov/buildings/energyplus/weatherdata_download.cfm
These are in CSV format. Any suggestions on converting these into BIN?

Instructions for converting EnergyPlus ".epw" files (".csv" format) to DOE2 ".bin" files. Go to http://bepan.info/weather and open 1 - Convert Energy-Plus.EPW to DOE2.BIN or http://doe2.com/index_Wth.html#eQ_WthProc
Christina,
The eQUEST web site provides a utility program that converts from the
EnergyPlus *.EPW format to the DOE-2 *.BIN format used in eQUEST. It's
a very simple one-shot process, and you don't need any other
procedures. I think the PDF to which you referred is talking about
customizing an existing weather file, not converting a weather file from
another format, e.g., EPW, to what eQUEST uses.
Joe
Thanks! Is this for CSV files are real time? Will the units be correct? The
files that I got were in Celsius and the eQuest files need to be in
fahrenheit.

Christina, you will have to reformat the CSV to
the text file format required to convert from
text to .BIN using the equest weather processor.
I use an Excel workbook. One sheet has the raw
CSV data and another sheet converts it to
Imperial and formats to the text format required by equest.
Chris,
Do you have a copy of the excel workbook, or is it simple enough to make my
own? Also, does this require the psych.xla plug-in for excel?
Thanks for you help!
Christina
Does anyone have an example of a CSV real time weather file that they
converted to BIN format for eQuest? Thank you everyone for all the help thus
far!
Keep in mind that the .bin files wont compile correctly unless the text file is correctly formatted. In the TMY2 documentation they have a listing of what variable goes in which column and what units it is expecting. When I say column, it?s not in an excel sense but in the sense that each character is a column. Also, look for a text editor that can edit the files vertically and it will make your life a lot easier. When I tried it I found a program called ultraedit and used the trial period to make my file. I?m sure there are others that have similar capabilities. I?ll attach a past weather file that I had made so you can see the finished product.
