eQuest modeling of Open / Uncovered Staircases

Dear Friends,

In one my recent Project I have building which is having five nos of Open / Uncovered Staircases and the building is three storey.

Shall I consider as part of building envelope and model it in eQuest for Baseline & Proposed Case?

Can anyone guide me?

Thanks,

Hi Nimesh,

If I'm correctly guessing the stairs are exterior to the building perimeter, I would advise not wrapping your envelope around the stairs and creating false interior spaces. Do model the exterior doorways, and consider approximating their effect as building shades for your proposed model (not the baseline).

If you're asking about open interior staircases interconnecting three stories, and your question is more about thermal zones/system relationships, I think the mailing list needs more info on those things to provide an informed response.

Dear Nick,

I am attaching herewith the building layout for the building showing the
staircases. Note that the as per the building layout these staircases are
not covered and open to surroundings.

There is no HVAC System serving to these staircases.

Thanks,

Hi Nimesh,

Looks like my first guess was correct - I'll stand by my suggestions to not include those stairs as part of the envelope perimeter, model the exterior doors for each level. At your option, the shading effect of the stairway constructions upon the envelope to reduce solar gains could be incorporated via building shades in detailed mode.

If there are any stairwell lighting loads for consideration, I'd make a point to handle those alongside perimeter/exterior area lighting with appropriate scheduling.

Best of luck!
