eQUEST wish list - DOAS capabilities?

Hi All,

DOE-2.3 is coming along slowly and it's anybody's guess as to when it will be ready. That said, Steve gates is asking for feedback regarding DOAS (dedicated outdoor air system) capabilities, as he will be implementing that next. The intent is to allow it to operate with any type of system.

Please share your ideas for desired DOAS capabilities in eQUEST, and emphasize what is most important to you. Limit your suggestions to anything related to ventilation. I will send a compiled list to Steve next week.

Thanks!
~Bill

Concerning DOAS, the following capabilities would be great :

1- Return air temperature/humidity is the actual mixed air temperature/humidity from the return of every system attached to the DOAS and varies hourly (for heat recovery purposes);

2- Removing the need of a dummy-zone;

3- Supply air temperature setpoint can vary hourly depending on its attached systems heating/cooling demands. IE : if attached systems are in cooling mode, supply = 55F, if in heating mode, supply = 70F. (right now the need of using a dummy zone limits this).

Great to know an update is being worked on. Fixing these would help out.

Thanks,

I would like to have capabilities to model different options for
dehumidification, such as reheat with a crossflow heat exchanger, dessicant
wheel, energy recovery wheel (on supply side), hot gas reheat, etc. Most of
the systems we see in the southeast cool to nominally 55F for
dehumidification much of the year, then reheat to neutral (70F) air to the
space.

Hi Bill,

It would be great if

1) I could enter numbers into the system SUPPLY-FLOW and zone
ASSIGNED-FLOW, and not have DOE2 adjust them.

2) OA-FLOW/PER + OA-FLOW/AREA = outside air flow

3) Transfer air between zones could be incorporated. And
EXHAUST-SOURCE could include a transfer air zone name.

4) Hourly reports could directly report system and zone outside air
cfm, rather than just the ratio (PO).

5) Staged capacity/low-speed-ratios could be implemented for VAV.

I know these aren't just DOAS issues, but I thought I'd throw them out
there.

Great suggestions. Also it would be nice to have the ability to modify a heating device downstream of the DOA cooling coil to simulate hot gas bypass or a supply desiccant system. There are many white papers regarding the efficiency of an enthalpy heat wheel located in the DOA supply downstream of the DX coil. This heat wheel is half exposed to the supply air and the other half heated by a hot water coil, furnace, hot gas bypass, heat pipe, etc.

These are all good suggestions. I would also expand on Shaun's point about transfer air between zones to incorporate energy recovery capabilities in the DOAS.

Now that I have finally shifted to Energyplus, it is to be expected that
the new version of eQuest will be released with all problems fixed, many
new features added, and still easy to use:-))
1. I second the previous poster that the dummy zones should be removed and
the OA system should do mass/temp calculations of actual return conditions
for all the streams that it caters to.
2. In the process, can the mixed air (including preheat) calcs and/or the
various help texts be streamlined. It is was never clear to me if the
preheat setpoint was just for the OA air or mixed air. Most of the OA
control strategies that I came across were about having a mixed air
setpoint, which was not allowed by eQuest (or I was not aware).
3. Since most economizers don't work as intended (problems with sensors,
leakage, stuck, cannot close completely etc), is there a way some of these
issues can be modelled directly instead of using workarounds.
4. While we are on the OA topic - has the OA /person and OA/sqft fixed
according to what ASHRAE wants instead of just Title 24? If not, then it
would be useful to have that fix.
Thanks,
-Rohini

Hi William,,

An input from my side can be is to reduce the building structural look's
change.
For example, as in Ecotect the building has a mesh sort of structure to
load with, in one tab. In other tab, in IES-VE also the building structure
behaves heavily.

For bigger model the eQUEST takes enough time to load so may be this change
can reduce the BDL load run time after having those sort of eQUEST built.

This may also reduce the BDL load file run after returning to Navigator and
then having finish.
May be this change can help duplicate the windows to reduce time.

You can have a go with mesh structure in one tab and prior building look in
another tab. You can have a try generate it. The final simulation run will
be same.
Hoping it may not cause you much of a heck after reading this post.
