Comcheck using ASHRAE 90.1-2010

Hi All,

I was checking a Comcheck compliance sheet for a project and the project was meeting compliance for ASHRAE 90.1-2010 using 60% WWR. I was really surprised by this and ran Comcheck myself (version 4.0.5.5) and found that I could get the envelope to pass with any amount of glazing as long as the total envelope UA was below the budget UA - regardless of glazing area.

I tried to see if I could do the same thing with IECC 2012 and it gave me an error but the program popped up a screen that told me to use ASHRAE 90.1-2010 because it does not have a max WWR limitation. See screenshots 1 & 2.

Is this really true? I was under the impression that we have to go with a performance route if the glazing exceeds 40% WWR? But that does not seem to be the case.

Appreciate the groups thoughts, thanks

Madhav

Probably what?s at play here in ComCheck is that your envelope met the requirements of Section 5.6 (the building Envelope Trade-Off Option, by virtue of meeting the envelope performance factor in Appendix C). Section 5.6 does not require that you comply to Section 5.5 (where the fenestration requirements are listed in Tables 5.5-xx.)

Madhav,

ASHRAE 90.1-2010 has a 40% WWR limitation if following the prescriptive path. Otherwise you could follow Section 11. See 5.2.1.
